About Lizzy
Hi! Welcome to my world.
I’m a self portrait artist/photographer, originally hailing from British Columbia, Canada, but now based wherever my suitcase happens to be (which is currently in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta). Wherever I am, I feel most at home in the mountains, forests, fields and ocean - all of which are heavily incorporated into my photography.
I have always loved hiking and exploring in raw, wild landscapes since my childhood, and that love for the wilderness is what inspires my photography today.
I primarily combine self portraiture with real landscapes (no composites or AI here), and often spend days or weeks at a time trekking and camping in the wilderness, always waiting for the right conditions to arise (I love a moody atmosphere!). I strive to capture ethereal, storytelling images that evoke peaceful solitude and portray the beauty of matching one's heartbeat with the beat of nature.
How did I start?
I started pursuing photography in 2006 (I was 12 years old), chasing my love of nature and animals with my dad’s camera - the first digital camera I had ever seen, it was literally just 2 megapixels. By 2010, with a slightly better camera of my own, I became inspired to broaden my photography horizons by attempting a year-long “365 project” of self portraits. Though challenging, I knew this would be a good way to push myself to learn fast and to grow my skills the art of photography - taking a self portrait every single day for a solid year. I had no particular style or “niche” yet, but it was a purely experimental year of following my curiosity and learning how to express my teenage self in front of the camera.
On the 365th day of this project (New Year’s Eve of 2010), I went out into the mountains to take my final self portrait. I had expected to not pursue self portraiture beyond this project… but while I set up my camera and sat on an icy rock in a frozen lake under the silent mountains, I felt a profound sense of peace and experienced an “aha” moment: Capturing that feeling of tranquility and connection with nature, I realized that I wasn’t done with self portraits yet after all. I had a feeling I was just getting started.
15 years later to this day, I still love combining self portraiture with real landscapes. Spending time in nature and capturing these images is like a form of therapy for me… And one of my greatest hopes is that my work can also inspire others to seek a deeper connection with creativity, nature and themselves: To channel emotion through photography, to find value in expressing vulnerability, to find peace in the presence of nature... and, of course, to walk forward with more love, gentleness and respect for ourselves and this beautiful earth we call home.
When I’m not hiking, camping or traveling, you can usually find me playing with my dog Pepper, or lounging on couch somewhere reading a good fantasy novel and eating lots of chocolate.
Thank you for following along on my journey! ♥
